New York - Jordan's intensive and continuous diplomatic
efforts together with the Arab foreign ministers’ committee working
with the international community, has successfully achieved a UN
Security Council resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire of
all military operations in Gaza.
After the adoption of UNSC resolution 1860, Jordan's Foreign Minister, Salaheddin Al Bashir stressed the urgency of prioritizing humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Al Bashir welcomed the resolution and commended the "international community for taking action to end the cycle of violence that has killed more than 700 Palestinians and unleashed a humanitarian crisis in Gaza."
Al Bashir, who has lead the Jordanian delegation in New York for the past three days, said Jordan and the Arab Foreign Ministers played a "key role in the intensive consultations" with the three permanent members of the UNSC (the United States, the United Kingdom and France) in drafting the achieved resolution.
"Our goal from day one was to achieve a resolution that=2 0calls for an immediate ceasefire that stops the Israel i aggression and preserves human life and not a UNSC presidential statement. Not all Arab concerns were included in this final resolution, however, it does reflect the Council's consensus and that is crucial;" said Al Bashir.
Jordan's efforts, he added, "at this point will focus on immediately addressing the humanitarian situation in the Gaza strip to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population, to restore normalcy to the lives of Palestinians and lift the blockade on the strip. “Jordan will also continue to urgently press ahead to galvanize international reconstruction efforts in Gaza that pave the way for the establishment of an independent, viable and contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza;" Al Bashir stressed.
Al Bashir added that Jordan will intensify its ongoing humanitarian efforts in the next few days. "Jordan is ready to guarantee the delivery of all humanitarian aid, food and medicine from the international community and we will discuss this with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon upon his visit to the region. It is crucial to lay out the building blocks for a better tomorrow for the Palestinians," Al Bashir said.
